Yellow Wild Indigo - Baptisia tinctoria

Yellow Wild Indigo (Baptisia sphaerocarpa) introduces a vibrant touch of yellow to the garden landscape. These shrub-like plants thrive in challenging conditions and have a long lifespan. As legumes, they possess the ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen, thereby enhancing soil fertility, which makes them outstanding companion plants. Commonly referred to as Yellow False Indigo, this name highlights the use of the plant's flower petals for dye production, although the resulting dye is less effective than that derived from true indigos. Additionally, Yellow Wild Indigo serves as a host plant for the Frosted Elfin, Orange Sulfur Butterfly, and Wild Indigo Duskywing. While native to the southern regions, it is perennial in hardiness zones 4 through 9

Growing Instructions 

Cold, moist stratification required. Mix seeds with moist substrate (vermiculite, perlite or moss) and place in a plastic bag and refrigerate for 6-8 weeks. Sow seed at 1/8 inch depth. Do not let seedling dry out while it is establishing.

OR

Sow directly outdoors in late fall to overwinter.
