This heirloom shelling pea dates back to 1880. Our earliest maturing variety, Alaska is a versatile, reliable pea that grows well in cool soil, so it is great for northern regions. The short vines grow to 90cm (36") and can benefit from some support. Expect heavy yields of round, straight, pale green pods, each containing 5-8 smooth peas. For drying as soup peas, let the plants mature to 80 days.

PLS 595 shelling pea produces heavy yields of long 11cm (4.5”) pods filled with an average of 11 tasty peas each. Easy to harvest pods are set high up on the upright, 60cm (24") plants that produce afila-type tendrils that are edible as well. Enjoy the sweetest tasting peas when harvested when they just fill the pods.

How to grow
Timing: Peas prefer cool weather. They can be planted in spring as early as the soil can be worked. Put a cloche over early plantings to warm and dry the soil. After April first, sow only Pea Enation-resistant varieties in areas where aphids carry this virus. Try planting again mid-to-late summer for a fall harvest crop.
Seeding: Sow thickly with serveral seeds per 5cm (2"). Aim for a plant ever 2-7cm (1-3") in rows set at least 30cm (12") apart. Or broadcast on raised beds at about 500g (1lb) per 10m2 (100sq ft.). In early plantings, seed should be 2cm (1") deep. After April 15th, plant seeds 5cm (2") deep. Pre-soaking seeds is not advised for wet soils.
Growing: Use well drained soil amended with finished compost. Add 2 cups of rock phosphate or bonemeal for every 3m (10') of row.
