Golden Alexanders - Zizia aurea Seed Pack

Golden Alexanders (Zizia aurea) is a remarkable native plant characterized by its vibrant golden-yellow hue, making it an essential addition to any garden. This species is straightforward to cultivate and has the ability to self-seed. While it can thrive in considerable shade, it ideally prefers full sun or light shade. Golden Alexanders are versatile and can adapt to various soil types. This cheerful plant plays a crucial role for numerous short-tongued insects, which can easily access the nectar from its small yellow flowers. The caterpillars of both Black Swallowtail and Ozark Swallowtail butterflies feed on its foliage. As an early bloomer, Golden Alexanders provides a splash of color to the garden for several weeks during late spring to early summer, a time when many other plants have yet to flower.

It is important to distinguish Golden Alexanders from the similar-looking Wild Parsnip (Pastinaca sativa), which is a highly invasive biennial often found along roadsides and in disturbed areas. Wild Parsnip grows taller than Golden Alexanders, flowers later, and can cause painful skin burns.

Growing Instructions

Cold, moist stratification required. Mix seeds with moist substrate (vermiculite, perlite or moss) and place in a plastic bag and refrigerate for 6-8 weeks. Sow seed at1/8 inch depth. Do not let seedling dry out while it is establishing.

OR

Sow directly outdoors in late fall to overwinter.
