Canada Anemone - Anemone canadensis Seed Pack

Canada Anemone (Anemone canadensis) serves as an excellent choice for a low-growing, resilient native ground cover. To enhance flowering, overcrowded clusters can be divided during the fall season. The flowers that bloom in spring are both whimsical and plentiful, while the foliage remains visually appealing throughout the autumn months. It is important to note that Canada Anemone can exhibit aggressive growth, necessitating careful planning regarding its placement within your garden. Additionally, it is crucial to distinguish Canada Anemone from other low-growing edible species, as all parts of this plant are toxic.

Similar to many woodland species, germinating Canada Anemone from seed can prove to be a challenge. This particular species requires a process known as double dormancy, or double cold moist stratification. When sown in the fall, it may take up to two growing seasons for germination to occur. Alternatively, if stratification is conducted indoors, the process should be repeated twice to ensure successful germination.

Growing Instructions 

Double wet and cold stratification required. Mix seeds with moist substrate (vermiculite, perlite or moss) and place in a plastic bag and refrigerate for 6-8 weeks. Remove from refrigerator and store at room temperature for 6-8 weeks. Put seeds back in refrigerator for a second 6-8 week cold moist stratification. Sow seed at 1/8 inch depth. Do not let seedling dry out while it is establishing.

Sow directly outdoors in late fall to overwinter for two seasons.
